The amount of time you will need to wear your braces will depend on your situation. Typically braces are worn from a year and a half to two years, though they are sometimes worn for longer than that. It depends on what your orthodontist is trying to accomplish for you. Sometimes, in addition to braces, you will also need to wear headgear, other wiring and, of course, you will need to wear your retainers (though these are often removable).

The good news is that you can affect the amount of time you will need to have orthodontia installed in your mouth. Dental hygiene, believe it or not, plays a large part in the progression of your orthodontia. Make sure that you follow your orthodontist’s instructions implicitly and you should be able to even cut down on the amount of time you have a device in your mouth!

The amount of time that you need to wear your braces also depends on what age you had them put on your teeth. Studies have shown that the earlier a person gets in to have their orthodontic process started, the faster it will go. While most people are not good candidates for braces until the age of ten or twelve, often an orthodontist can begin treating your child as early as age seven. There is a lot of preparatory work that can be done to get your child’s mouth ready for braces—which will cut down on the amount of time the actual braces need to be worn. Another reason to start treating your child early is that early treatment is often the best way to prevent surgery, extractions or other complications that could arise later on.

That said, not all braces-wearers are children or teenagers. Twenty five percent of orthodontia wearers are adults. Many adults go in to correct problems that they could not fix as children.

Another factor in the amount of time you will need to wear your braces is the type of braces that you choose. Metal braces work the best as they are made from the strongest materials. Ceramic braces, while certainly strong and better looking, often take more time because they are not as strong as the metal braces. Some people choose to have braces put on the insides of their teeth and these, too, can take more time to work effectively.

If you want to cut down on the amount of time that you will have to wear your braces, choose the strongest materials (there are plenty of ways to dress them up) and follow your orthodontist’s dental hygiene instructions exactly as they are given.
